Ponta do Arnel viewpoint (Miradouro da Ponta do Arnel) and the Arnel Lighthouse (Farol do Arnel) are two of the most interesting points on São Miguel Island. Located on the Island's east coast, they are popular sites, especially the viewpoint, due to easy access and parking very close.

From Ponta do Arnel Viewpoint, a panoramic view of the Arnel Lighthouse, the Northeast Harbor and the impressive coastal cliffs is possible. 

This overlook is very popular for its lighthouse, a reference place for cetacean observation near the coast. 

There’s a small, tarmac road to get to the Arnel Lighthouse. However, you should be very careful as it is not easy accessibility and the possibility of parking is very scarce. The inclination is extremely marked and can be very complicated the climb, for some cars. However, you always have the alternative of walking down. But with a lot of calm because the inclination is really, remarkable.

So, in summary, be aware because the access path to the Arnel Pointa Lighthouse is narrow and rather sharp slope, 35%, and has no parking. So despite the possibility of going to the car beacon or motorcycle, you advise making the 500-meter commute on foot.

Visiting the Lighthouse

Hours

Summer: Wednesdays, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Winter: Wednesdays, 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Entry is free and no registration or reservation is required.

Next to the entrance is a sign where the name of the survivors of a Portuguese submarine who has been sunk by the Germans in World War II. Those shipwrecks rowed around 300 kilometros, in a lifeboat, to the Arnel Lighthouse, following the light signs of the Lighthouse.

Ponta do Arnel viewpoint is right at the entrance to Vila do Nordeste, in the Nazaré area, along the Regional Road, allowing you to see the Arnel Lighthouse much closer, as well as part of the coast.

This is a meeting point for residents of the Nazaré area, especially in the late afternoons and sunny Sunday afternoons, perpetuating a long-standing tradition.

The viewpoint is equipped with parking (including bus) and toilets.
