The parish of Povoação, where the first settlers of the island of São Miguel set foot and where the municipal seat is located, is the largest and most populous in the municipality with 2,161 inhabitants. It also consists of the center, the outskirts – Comissão and Morro – and the Lombas do Cavaleiro, Carro, Botão, Pomar and Pós.
The festivities in honor of the patron saint, Our Lady Mother of God, which take place on the first weekend of September, and the celebrations in honor of Corpus Christi are some of the highlights of this first settlement. It is at this time of year that many emigrants visit the land to spend the holidays with their families.
The must-see tourist attractions include the Municipal Garden, the churches of Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus and Nossa Senhora do Rosário, the latter classified as a property of public interest, as it was the first parish church on the island of São Miguel, the Zoological Park, the Porta do Povoamento monument and the allegorical sculpture of the First Settler, both located on the seafront and the various viewpoints scattered throughout, from where you can see stunning panoramic views.

This viewpoint, at an altitude of 232m, is located by the Regional Road EN1-1A, parish of Povoação, municipality of Povoação. From this viewpoint, you can see Lombas da Povoação (hills), Pico dos Bodes, and Pico da Vara.
