πŸ’›πŸ’› Parish of Furnas (Municipality of Povoação)

FURNAS
(Parish of Povoação Municipality)
37.76909, -25.31912

The parish of Furnas is one of the most beautiful locations in the Azores archipelago, commonly known as the “Visiting Room of the Azores”, with 1,439 inhabitants.

Its name is closely related to the secondary volcanism phenomena in this location, known as “fumaroles or calderas”.

However, some say that the greatest wealth of Furnas lies in the diversity of the waters from its springs, which are considered by experts to be the largest hydro poles in the world with 22 classified qualities of mineral-medicinal waters.

In this idyllic paradise, we can see the lagoon, with its flowery and green banks, where, on one side, the chapel of Nossa Senhora das VitΓ³rias is located and, on the other, the area where the famous "cozido das caldeiras" is prepared with the heat from the interior of the volcanic soil, a delicacy with an incomparable taste, which attracts thousands to this place, which is truly enchanted by many.

The landmark of the municipality of Povoação is also known for the magnificence of its parks and gardens. Here, we can find a vast and diverse number of private parks and some public ones, of which we highlight the José do Canto, D. Beatriz, Fonte Bela, António Borges, and Florestal, the latter open to the public every day of the week. However, and without detracting from the beauty and importance of all these, special attention should be paid to the Terra Nostra Botanical Park, also open every day, a place where you can find a wide variety of shrubs and trees, some of which are over 200 years old, as well as an iron-rich pool, dominated by the imposing house of the Park, the former summer residence of its founder, the Englishman Thomas Hickling.

Also known as the “Camellia Capital”, this is the location where a renowned camellia exhibition is held every year during the low season, which has already attracted visitors from all over the world, fans of this flower that is considered the queen of gardens and orchards during the winter season. However, throughout the year, other religious festivities also constitute a great attraction for this already very attractive parish, namely the festivities of "Primeira Dominga", "Senhor dos Passos", and the festival of the patron saint Santana, which takes place on the last weekend of July.

We can also visit and observe the stunning views from the various viewpoints available or try out the Achada das Furnas Golf Course, consisting of 18 holes surrounded by an enormously beautiful landscape.
