RIBEIRINHA
(Parish of Ribeira Grande Municipality)
37°49′31″N 25°29′23″W

Ribeirinha is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, with an area of 17.75 km² and 2,349 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 132.3 inhabitants/km².

Toponymy
The watercourse that runs through the center of the town (Ribeira das Gramas) gave the town its name. This parish has two places, with a curious name, Gramas: Gramas de Cima and Gramas de Baixo.

Heritage
Some of the points of interest in this parish are:
Miradouro da Vigia da Baleia,
Porto de Santa Iria,
Igreja do Santíssimo Salvador do Mundo;
Ermida de Santo António;
Moinhos;
Fontenários centenários.

Without a doubt, the Ex libris is the port of Ribeirinha, the port of Santa Iria, where fishing and pleasure boats dock. This port has an old construction, resembling a fort, and it was there that some of the orange production was exported to England.

Tourism
The route by the sea, in the Chão das Gatas area, is of interest.

It has a peaceful fishing area with a rock beach, where you can practice fishing, whether with reeds or underwater.

It is also worth highlighting all the beauty of the green spaces in the parish, as well as an old chicory and linen factory that was once a center of development not only for the parish but also for the entire island.

Festivals and pilgrimages
The parish festivals are very popular in the municipality:

Holy Week;
Divino Espírito Santo (June);
Most Holy Savior of the World (1st Sunday of August), with a beautiful image of the transfigured Christ
Carnival
Lenten Pilgrimages
Economy
It is currently evolving as a dormitory parish in the city of Ribeira Grande, with no industry or activities of importance except farming.

This location perfectly portrays a typical Micaelense life, where time runs slowly, without rushing.

There are some restaurants, with at least one good and typical restaurant, although there is no shortage of 5 or 6 taverns that surround the cross (center of the parish).

CALHETAS
(Parish of Ribeira Grande Municipality)
37.82355, -25.60678

Calhetas is a rural Azorean parish in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, located on the north coast of the island of São Miguel. The parish has an area of 4.70 km2 and 910 inhabitants (2021), corresponding to a population density of 210.2 inhabitants/km2. The town is 9 km from the seat of the municipality to which it belongs and 11.4 km from Ponta Delgada, the island's main city. It faces the sea to the north and the municipality of Ponta Delgada to the south and east.

Toponym
The name of this parish comes from the configuration of its coast, which has small rock or pebble coves, called calhetas, and there is even a small port, now a bathing area, where artisanal fishing was once practiced.

History
The village of Calhetas was annexed to Pico de Pedra, a village that was then part of the parish of Senhor Bom Jesus de Rabo de Peixe. In 1924, the place of Calhetas, then already part of the parish of Pico da Pedra, was elevated to Parish status.

Contrary to the trend of emigration to Canada, the United States and Bermuda, this parish's demographic density has gradually evolved. Calhetas had a total of 595 inhabitants, according to censuses carried out in 1991. In 2001, the population experienced a small increase, totaling 780 people. The demographic density is very high, as it is a predominantly rural region. Currently, the population should total 1000 inhabitants.

It was at the beginning of the second half of the 19th century that the industrial tea culture was introduced to the Azores, especially in São Miguel, although it is tradition that at the end of the 17th century, the plant already existed in the archipelago. According to a note from Dr. Carreiro da Costa, tea would have started in São Miguel with the arrival around 1820 of some seeds brought from Brazil by Jacinto Leite, from São Miguel, who used them on his property, in Calhetas.

Geography
Located on the north coast of the island, this is the smallest parish in the Municipality of Ribeira Grande, having a church whose patron saint is Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem (festivities on the 4th Sunday of September), a convent of the Order of Clarissas called Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora das Mercês, a Baptist devotion hall, and a cemetery.

In terms of recreation and tourist interest, the parish has a tourist house, an old manor house from the 18th century (1723).

The sea washes the coasts in the North; to the south, there is Pico da Pedra; to the east, Rabo de Peixe and to the west Fenais da Luz.

The place of Calhetas, then belonging to Rabo de Peixe, is a village located on the rock on the north coast of the island from which the sea has been constantly robbing its houses, and even according to Friar Agostinho de Montalverne, the primitive hermitage of Bon voyage. Even today, the people of Calhetas call these pebbles in the middle of the sea Pedra da Boa Viagem.
