CALOURA
N 37.71387; W 25.49588
If there is a place on the island of SΓ£o Miguel that deserves to be visited, famous lagoons, waterfalls and thermal water pools aside, it is Caloura. An area of great natural beauty, with one of the most picturesque fishing ports in the archipelago, Caloura is today a popular place for residents and tourists looking for good weather, invigorating sea bathing, relaxation, and... great grilled fish. Located in the middle of the south coast of SΓ£o Miguel, easily accessible from anywhere on the island, Caloura should definitely be an item on your list of must-visit places.
Caloura and its microclimate
Caloura is known among the locals for having one of the best microclimates in SΓ£o Miguel. For those who are not accustomed to climate terminology – in the Azores, there is no other option than to be aware of the subject –, a microclimate refers to a relatively small area whose climatic conditions differ from the surrounding space. The fact that Caloura is a flat terrain, with a very low altitude, that extends into the sea, means that it can often escape the accumulation of clouds that are concentrated in the island's interior. Much sunnier and less humid than much of SΓ£o Miguel, it is one of the locals' favorite refuges for strolling and swimming in the sea.
Porto da Caloura and bathing area
Nestled at the foot of a basalt cliff, Caloura's only fishing port is one of the oldest on the island and the area's biggest attraction. The fishing practiced there continues to be artisanal, in which small groups of fishermen, generally from the same family, go out in "open mouth" boats - without overturning - to catch small fish. Right next to the port and the hustle and bustle of fishermen, separated by a pier that ends in a small lighthouse, is the Caloura bathing area. A small artificial saltwater pool for children and an entrance to the sea with clear waters delight the swimmers who flock there. Blue flag, with various life-saving equipment and two lifeguards present during the summer season, the Caloura bathing area is, year after year, one of the busiest spots of the summer.
Baixa D'Areia Beach
In Caloura, on the opposite side of the port, to the west, there is a small sandy beach just 100 meters long known by locals as Praia da Baixa D'Areia. Sheltered between ravines, in a small recess on the coast, this beach with very fine sand receives several bathers who come there every year. Above the beach, with views of the sea, in addition to a large parking lot, there are changing rooms and one of the best equipped picnic areas in SΓ£o Miguel. With several barbecues and tables available and a never-tiring panorama, this space is a popular meeting point for families and groups of friends who come there on lively afternoons and evenings, both summer and winter.
