Nordeste is a Portuguese village on the island of São Miguel, the headquarters of Nordeste municipality,  with 101.51 km² of area and 4,937 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 9 parishes. Nordeste is bounded to the south by the Municipality of Povoação, to the West by the Ribeira Grande, and North and East by the Atlantic Ocean.


In Nordeste, there are many sights like the Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego, the Miradouro da Ponta da Madrugada, the Serra da Tronqueira, the Farol do Arnel, the Parque Natural dos Caldeirões,, among other lookouts that allow panoramic landscapes to the sea.

Nordeste is well known for its vegetation and the beautiful flowers like the hydrangeas or the azaleas that garnish the county roads.

Here the Pico da Vara is located, the highest point of the island of São Miguel, about 1100 meters altitude. Its relief is of mountain character, cut out by streams sliding through the vegetation. With an approximate extension of 1982 hectares, it incorporates a large amount of endemic and typical Macaronesia vegetation, as a rare, great-value flora assembly. The Priolo, the island's endemic bird, finds its habitat here.

From the Pico da Vara, a natural lookout, it is possible to spot a stunning pan on much of the island, prominently for the Planalto dos Graminhais, the Pico Verde, the Serra da Tronqueira, to the south, and the Caldeira das Furnas and the serras de Água de Pau e Devassa, to the west.

Here, it feels like a distinct piece of land on the island of São Miguel while you find breathtaking views, superb valleys, imposing mountains, waterfalls, and refreshing streams. One goes from viewpoint to viewpoint and gets astounded on the flower beds that make Nordeste the most flowery municipality.
